A pedestrian has been shot during a clash between the police and the members of Chhatra Shibir in Dargar Gate area on Saturday.
Quoting witnesses, Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Manirul Islam said: “The Shibir members gathered in the area around 11am and were preparing to bring out a procession.”
“Upon receiving the information, we rushed in and tried to foil their programme, triggering a chase and counter chase.”
At one point, the student cadres of Jamaat-e-Islami men set off a crude bomb and threw brick chips at the police, forcing them to open fire, said Manirul.
“The police fired 15 rounds of bullets in order to control the situation, leaving one Rubel injured,” he added.
Rubel has been admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Manirul said one Shibir man has been nabbed from the spot. His identity could not be ascertained immediately.
