Gazipur mayor, 39 others get anticipatory bail

The High Court yesterday granted four weeks' anticipatory bail to Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Prof M Mannan and 39 others in a case filed for creating violence and obstructing police from performing duties.

A high court bench comprising Justice Mahmudul Haque and Justice Akram Hossain gave the bail after a hearing.

Sub-Inspector of Joydebpur police station Mahmudul Hasan filed the case on Sunday against some 400 BNP leaders, activists including Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Mayor MA Mannan, on charge of creating violence and obstructing police from performing their duties.

Earlier, 47 people, including 17 police officials, were injured in a chase and counter chase between law enforcers and BNP supporters in the district.

They also locked into a chase and counter chase each other when the police barred the BNP members from bringing out a protest rally around 12:30pm on Sunday.

Police detained four people from the spot in this connection. Police also fired 20 rounds of rubber bullets and three rounds of tear shells to bring the situation under control.
