A 33-member convening committee of Sylhet city unit BNP was formed yesterday.
Soon after the announcement of the committee a section of deprived and aggrieved BNP leaders brought out a protest procession with brooms in their hands demanding the committee cancellation. Police dispersed them, and arrested four activists from the spot.
Shahriar Hossain Choudhury and Badruzzaman Selim were made convener and joint convenor of the new committee respectively.
The other convening committee members are Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, Ariful Huq Choudhury, M A Huq, Nasim Hossain, Professor Moksud Ali, Abdul Kaium Jalali Ponki, Rezaul Hasan Koyes Ludi, Forhad Choudhury Shamim, Emdad Hossain Choudhury.
Party leaders said most of the new committee members are followers of Shamser Mobin Chowdhury. As BNP leaders Maksud Ali and Farhad Chowdhury Shamim’s followers did not secure major positions, they brought out the procession demanding annulment of the new committee.
The aggrieved and deprived BNP leaders brought out a broom procession around 8pm from city’s Mira Bazar area chanting slogans against Mobin.
When the procession reached Jindabazar area parading through Naiorpoll, Jail road, Barutkhana and Jindabazar court point, police had obstructed the procession.
The procession then made an about turn and marched towards Jindabazar area. Police dispersed them and detained former student leader Abdul Ahan Khan from the spot but released him after sometimes but arrested four others.
Shah Mobashir, Sub-Inspector of Kotwali police station, said they arrested four persons from the spot.
