Two factions of local Awami League leaders got into a clash during the party’s extended meeting and they hurled crude bombs and fired blank shots at the party’s Shibbari Road office yesterday.
Witnesses said around 8pm, the meeting was going on in the office but the supporters of Mymensingh municipality Mayor Ikramul Haq suddenly began chanting slogans outside the office against district Awami League President and Religious Affairs Minister Principal Motiur Rahman.
Supporters of the minister came out of the office when slogans were being chanted.
Supporters of the mayor fired blank shots at the time. Several crude bombs were also exploded.
The minister left the party office with the help of police, who arrived on the scene shortly.
Abu Mohammad Fazlul Karim, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, said security had been ramped up in the town to avert any untoward situation.
