The second phase of 48-hour nationwide hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting its ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami’s death sentence for his crimes during the Liberation War, is underway peacefully on Sunday.
The shutdown began at 6am and it will end at 6am on Tuesday.
Vehicular movement is normal in the capital city. No unpleasant incident is yet to be reported till updating of this story at 12:40pm.
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in different parts of the country, including the capital ahead of the shutdown.
The BGB men alongside members of other law enforcement agencies, including police, started patrolling the city streets on Saturday evening to maintain the law and order, said sources at the BGB headquarters.
The first phase 24-hour hartal enforced by Jamaat ended on Friday morning amid poor response.
The city life was largely unaffected as vehicular movement was almost normal.
On October 29, the International Crimes Tribunal awarded death sentence to Jamaat chief Matiur Rahman Nizami for committing crimes against humanity in the Liberation War in 1971.
Within an hour of announcement of the verdict, Jamaat acting Ameer Maqbul Ahmed and acting secretary general Shafiqur Rahman issued a press release announcing the shut-downs.
