JCD leader held in Dhaka airport; sent behind bars

The immigration police of Shahjalal International Airport yesterday arrested the BNP's student front Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) General Secretary Habibur Rashid while he was trying fly to the United States.

“Soon after the arrest was made around 3am, the immigration police handed over Habib to Airport police station and later he was shown arrested in a case filed with Shahabagh police station,” Airport police station OC Shah Alam told the Dhaka Tribune.

The OC also stated that police arrested Habib, on whom there was an embargo of travelling abroad, in the case filed on charge of vandalism during the BNP enforced nationwide hartal on September 22.

Afterwards, Shahabagh police station SI Azimuddin and also the investigation officer of the case placed Habib before a court of Metropolitan Magistrate Anowar Sadat seeking a ten-day remand plea.

However, the court ordered to send the leader to jail and fixed today for hearing on the remand prayer and the charges raised against him.

Habib, a US citizen, is an accused in around 80 cases filed with different police stations in the capital although he later secured bail in those cases. About two months ago the embargo was imposed on him.
