Imran: Sayeedi’s verdict shows govt trying to re-establish Jamaat

Gonojagoron Moncho spokesman Imran H Sarker yesterday alleged that the government is trying to re-establish Jamaat-e-Islami in the country and that has become clear through the Supreme Court verdict which commuted the war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayeedi’s death sentence to life imprisonment.

‘The ruling party [Awami League] is attacking us with police and its cadres every day and creating factions in the Moncho just to stop the trial of war criminals,” he said at a cultural function the Moncho organised at Shahbagh intersection in protests against the verdict on Sayeedi, also a top Jamaat leader.

Imran said the Awami League-led alliance had pledged before the January 5 election that they would meet the six point-demand of the Moncho but they have not met that pledge and are maintaining close ties with the Jamaat after negotiating with them.

The Moncho observed the third day of the seven-day programme, when various cultural organisations, including Udichi Shilpi Gosthi, Khela Ghor and Dhaka University-based band Arjan sang protest and patriotic songs at the cultural function.

The remaining five-day programme are open discussion today, screening of liberation war documentary tomorrow, rendition of patriotic songs and recitation of poetry on Wednesday, film and documentary show on Thursday, and a mass rally on Friday at Shahbagh.

Since February, 2013, Gonojagoron Moncho has been demanding the capital punishment for the war criminals for their crimes committed during 1971 liberation war.
