At least 15 persons have been injured as the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Shibir locked in clash with police in Rajarhata area.
Two police constables and two journalists area among the injured.
Witnesses said Jamaat activists brought out a procession in support of Sunday's hartal around 8:30am. They staged a rally in front of Loknath School of the city.
Meanwhile, the Jamaat activists hurled bricks and crude bombs targeting police van in the area. In retaliation, police fired rubber bullet at the Jamaat supporters triggering a clash.
Later, additional police rushed to the spot and dispersed the Jamaat men through firing rubber bullet and tear shell.
Boalia police station Officer-in-Charge Abdus Sobhan said police held five persons from the spot.
