BNP-led 20-party alliance calls fresh programmes

The BNP-led 20-party alliance yesterday announced to stage countrywide demonstration programmes protesting the government move to restore the parliament’s power to impeach Supreme Court judges.

The alliance would stage demonstration in district and divisional headquarters, excluding Dhaka tomorrow, and in the capital on Thursday, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan announced during a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters.

The venue and time of the demonstration in Dhaka would be announced later, he added.

The decision was made during an emergency meeting of the alliance members at Nayapaltan.

“The government has taken the initiative to empower the unelected parliamentarians with impeachment authority with a view to consolidate the party’s power. Government’s such evil attempt is not acceptable to the people,” Nazrul Islam Khan said.

Nazrul alleged that the government had taken the initiative to keep the judges in fear, so that they could establish absolute control over the judiciary.

“If the bill is passed, appointment and impeachment of judges will be under the executive division’s control,” he said.

Although no quarter had placed any demand in this regard, the government was going to amend the constitution, the BNP leader claimed, and said: “Certainly there is conspiracy.”
