A defamation case has been filed against BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for making derogatory remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
AB Siddique, president of Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, a pro-Awami League organisation, yesterday filed the case with the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Dhaka.
Taking cognisance of the case, Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Erfan Ullah asked the officer-in-charge of Paltan police station to investigate the matter and submit a report to the court within October 20.
In his complaint, AB Siddique claimed that Tarique Rahman had called the Awami League a party of “black sheep” and Sheikh Hasina “the leader of black sheep.”
On August 24, Tarique Rahman at a seminar at Queen Mary University in London made the remarks.
Mirza Fakhrul had distorted the history by saying that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman uttered “Joy Pakistan” in his historical speech on March 7, the complainant added.
He made his comments at a programme held at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on September 5 marking the death anniversary of former finance minister M Saifur Rahman.
On September 1, SM Nur-e-Alam Siddique, vice-president of Awami Matsyajibi League, lodged another defamation case with the same court against Fakhrul for calling Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina “a killer” and Awami League “a party of killers.”
