Olama League demands resignation of chief justice

Coming down hard on Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha for declaring the 16th amendment to the constitution illegal in a recently-delivered Supreme Court verdict, Bangladesh Awami Olama League has warned him of waging a mass movement if he does not resign from his post. Issuing a press statement on Friday, Olama League President Pir Aktar Hossain Bukhari, General Secretary Kazi Mawlana Abul Hasan Sheik Shariatpuri and other leaders demanded the chief justice’s resignation. Terming Sinha unfit for the position of chief justice, they alleged that the chief justice made some injudicious remarks about the parliament and lawmakers. They claimed Sinha is ignorant of Bangladesh, its sovereignty and national parliament even though he is in the position of chief justice.
