In observance of the 10th anniversary of the 2004 grenade attack day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lay wreaths at the temporary memorial at Bangabandhu Avenue today at 5:21pm, the time when the attack took place.
A milad mahfil will be held and doa will be offered at the same venue. The premier will also meet family members of the victims of the attack.
During the 2004 attack, miscreants blasted grenades at an Awami League rally at the party’s central office at Bangabandhu Avenue, killing 24 activists, including the party’s women affairs secretary Ivy Rahman who was the wife of former president Zillur Rahman, and left dozens other injured.
President Abdul Hamid and the premier issued separate messages on marking the day.
In a press release issued yesterday, the Awami League alleged the grenade attack was carried out by the BNP-Jamaat alliance government, with direct instruction by Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman and then cabinet members, to kill Hasina and create a leadership crisis in the Awami League.
Although Hasina survived the attack, her right ear was seriously damaged by the sound of grenades.
In his message, the president said the attack was a blueprint for killing Hasina.
Urging all political parties to be respectful towards each other, the president said it is essential for establishing democracy.
Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam in a press release asked party activists to observe the day in a befitting manner.
