At least 10 people were injured yesterday when two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League, engaged in a clash over establishing supremacy at Comilla University (CU).
The two groups were led by BCL convener Mahmudur Rahman Masum and BCL leader Ilias Hossain Sabuj.
No classes were held at the university yesterday because of the incident.
On Sunday night, Masum and his associates attacked the Shaheed Dhirendranath Hall of the university leaving 10 students injured, alleged Ilias. The injured were admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
“Protesting the attack we laid a siege on the main gate of the university,” said Illias. Illias said Mahmudur Rahman Masum was made the convener of the BCL committee on September 15, 2012.
Among the 48 members of the committee, the studentship of 37 members had expired including Masum’s. He, however, was still occupying a room at the university’s Nazrul Hall, claimed Illias.
Denying the allegation, BCL Convener Mahmudur Rahman Masum said Illias was an activist of Chhatra Dal and an intruder in the Chhatra League.
Registrar of CU Mujibur Rahman said a seven-member probe body led by Dr Syedur Rahman, dean of the science faculty, had been formed to investigate the matter. “The students who are living in the halls illegally will be removed after the investigation,” he said.
