The youth front of ruling Awami League’s Khulna Mohanagar unit has been facing an acute crisis ahead of the triennial council of Khulna Mohanagar Awami League scheduled to be held on September 27.
The council, first in last 10 years, is expected to form a new central committee of the Mohanagar Awami League. Tension beefed up between the two wings of the ruling party – Mohanagar Awami League and Mohanagar Jubo League – as top leaders of both wings were very keen and desperate to secure important posts in the new committee, sources said.
Anisur Rahman Poplu, convener of Khulna Mohanagar Jubo League, has publicly expressed his strong will to contest for general secretary post of the Mohanagar Awami League against current General Secretary Mizanur Rahman, also a lawmaker, who had been in the post for last 10 years.
The announcement was followed by submission of a supplementary charge sheet in Jubo League leader Bithar murder case against Poplu on July 31. However, his name was not in the accused list when the first charge sheet was submitted last year. Poplu’s name replaced the name of central Jubo League leader Mezbah Hossain Buruj, sources said.
Besides, many Jubo League leaders and activists, following the incident, were arrested in different allegations, including assault, vandalism, tender manipulation, land grabbing and drug business, leaving the ruling party youth front in acute crisis.
In the latest development, police arrested Taj Nabi and Suj, two joint conveners of Khulna Mahanagar Ward 13, in connection with an assault and vandalism case in Khalishpur, which was filed by local Awami League leader Wasiur Rahman Mithu on Sunday.
On the other hand, police arrested Jubo League leaders Ibrahim Marshal and Ibad Morol in connection with a mugging case in Dumuria area on June 4, while another Jubo League leader Sayeed was arrested in a murder case.
Meanwhile, Anisur Rahman Poplu was nominated as the convener of Khulna Mohanagar Jubo League on January 6, 2009 to form a full form a full committee after holding a council within a short time. However, the convener committee has been running the Mohanagar Jubo League since then.
When asked regarding his stance to contest for the Mohanagar Awami League general secretary post, Poplu told the Dhaka Tribune that party activists wanted him to contest for the post, adding that no crisis would be created, if he stepped down from Jubo League.
