Shifting from its previous stance to announce tougher programmes after Eid to unseat the government, the 20-party alliance led by the BNP yesterday decided to reorganise the parties in the first place.
“We will not go for any large-scale programme right now. We have decided to reorganise our parties and involve people with our movement. Then we will go for big programmes,” an alliance leader, seeking anonymity, told the Dhaka Tribune.
The alliance has decided to organise silent processions holding black flags in the capital and across the country on August 16 protesting Israeli invasion in Gaza. They will also hold a rally on August 19 in protest against the National Broadcasting Policy.
The alliance leaders would start visiting different districts from August 21.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on several occasions had threatened to declare tougher programmes after Eid to oust the government. Her alliance did not take part in the January 5 election.
Safiul Alam Prodhan, president of Jagpa, said the decisions would be disclosed to the media today after holding a secretary general-level meeting of the alliance at the BNP’s Nayapaltan office.
“Madam [Khaleda Zia] will not visit any district right now. First, we will visit different districts. Fixture of the tour is yet to be finalised,” he added.
These issues were discussed in the BNP’s Standing Committee meeting on Sunday night and finalised at yesterday’s alliance meeting held at Khaleda’s Gulshan office.
Jatiya Party (Zafar) chief Kazi Zafar Ahmed and Liberal Democratic Party President Oli Ahmed did not join the meeting for illness.
