Obaidul Quader: Cattle markets along roads won’t be allowed

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader asked traders not to set up cattle markets along road and highways in order to make roads across the country jam-free ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

“Nobody would be allowed to set up cattle markets along roads and highways,” the minister said while visiting the four-lane upgrading work on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Siddhirganj in Narayanganj yesterday.

Claiming that journey of people during Eid-ul-Fitr was smooth, he said people had been able to travel this time with a lot of ease and this had been possible due to a coordinated efforts by all.

The coordinated effort will continue to ensure that the travelling for people gets easier ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja and Eid-ul-Azha, he said.

Besides implementing traffic rules on the roads, the minister said, there is a need for making the passengers and the drivers of vehicles more aware of the rules so that the traffic situation comes under control.

Quader said the traffic situation eased a lot during the recent Eid-ul-Fitr due to the team work by the police, administration, transport owners and workers.

He also said that the construction of Kachpur, Meghna and Meghna-Gomti 2nd Bridges founded by Japan International Cooperative Agency will begin in January next.

The work on the new Sitalakkhya Birdge will also begin very soon with the assistance from the Saudi government.

Asked about the Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali’s comment over journalists, he said what the minister said about newsmen was his personal view.

He also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had appointed him as a minister, so she could question him about his statement.

Deputy Comissioner, Narayanganj Anisur Rahman Mia, Police Super Khandaka Mohiuudin and Chief Executive Engineer of Roads and Highway Department Aftab Hossain Khan accompanied the minister during the visit.
