Leftist student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra Union leader Liton Nandi considered a reporter’s question as yellow journalism at a media conference held at Madhur Canteen at 12pm on Sunday.
Liton was asked whether the leftists involved in demanding the Dhaka University Central Students Union (Ducsu) election secretly met the opponent of AAMS Arefin Siddique centring the Dhaka University (DU) Vice Chancellor (VC) panel election.
Left leaning alliance Pragatishil Chatra Jote organised the press conference to announce their next programmes and urge their demands on different issues, including the Ducsu election, scuffle between teachers-students on VC panel election day, affiliated college and students' protest.
Pragatishil Chatra Jote Coordinator Imran Habib Ruman read the written statement at the press conference.
After the statement was read, Liton said in the question-answer session: "The movement of the left student organisation is not against any individual's position. This movement is not against University of Dhaka Vice-Chancellor Professor Arefin Siddique. This movement was the result of the long expected Ducsu election.”
A reporter then asked Liton: "You are allegedly attending secret meetings with the people who are considered the opponents of the VC of DU. On August 1, you and a few leaders met the VC of Jagannath University (JnU) Professor Mizanur Rahman secretly. The meeting was held in Professor Mizan's office."
Liton replied: "Your question is equivalent to yellow journalism."
Pragatishil Chatra Jote plans to organise a protest rally at 12pm on August 8 at Aparajeyo Bangla. On VC panel election day during the Ducsu election protest, the organisation will submit a complaint letter to the DU and JnU Anti Female Oppression Cell protesting against the harassment of female students by the teachers.
Central President of Bangladesh Chatra Union GM Jilani Shuvo, President of Bangladesh Chatra Federation Golam Mostafa, acting president of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front Masud Rana, Joint Convenor of Biplabi Chhatra Maitree Iqbal Kabir, and Joint Convenor of Chatra Oikya Forum Sarkar Al Imran, among others, were present at the press conference.
