BNP acing secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the president has betrayed the nation through his remarks about the January 5 polls in his recent meeting with UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon.
The BNP leader made the remarks just after a day of president’s remarks to the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that dialogue would take place after the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent government.
“President’s remarks on dialogue and election frustrated people. People want a credible election immediately,” Fakhrul said while addressing a training programme of BNP leaders at a hotel in the capital.
President Abdul Hamid on Thursday told the UN chief that people have accepted the January 5 election and the dialogue to resolve the prevailing political crisis would take place after the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent Awami League government.
Fakhrul said the president has lost the confidence of the people. He also hoped that the president would work for the country and its people going beyond the partisan view.
Later, the spokesperson of the party at National Press Club said it seems Abdul Hamid is a better leader among the Awami League.
“When he [Hamid] took oath as president, he became neutral. Now you have told the UN secretary general that January 5 election was credible. Where did you see that the election was credible? The whole people of the country boycotted the election.”
