Bogra Jamaat leader arrested in Sayedee violence case

Detectives have arrested a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader for his alleged involvement in instigating mob to carry out violence in the district after verdict in a war crimes case against its central leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee last year.

Md Yasin Ali is the nayeb-e-ameer of Shahjahanpur upazila unit Jamaat and also a former chairman of the upazila.

Yasin was arrested from the town’s Jaleshwaritala area on Thursday morning when he had gone to the court to appear before it in a case hearing, ASP of Bogra police’s media cell Gaziur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.

The Jamaat leader is accused in three cases filed with Shahjahanpur police station. Of those, two were lodged over vandalism and arson in the offices of local Awami League and the Muktijoddha Sangsad on March 3 last year. The other case was filed for vandalism of a truck and arson during hartal hours.

He was facing arrest warrant in the case over vandalism of the Awami League office.

At least four people including three women were killed on that day as law enforcers resisted an angry mob carried out massive violence in Shahjahanpur’s different government and private establishments. They were incited by the Jamaat men saying that death row convict Sayedee was seen in the moon.
