The government is planning to slap a ban on the politics of the Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, the anti-independence political force in the country.
“This is a political decision. Our government is considering banning them,” Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali told the Dhaka Tribune.
He, however, said there is a case pending with the High Court and after completion of its process the government would think about it.
The minister said this yesterday after attending a programme on the occasion of flag-hoisting day in Kolkata mission on April 18, 1971.
Earlier, Ambassador Waliur Rahman in the programme proposed that politics of Jamaat-Shibir should be banned.
Walliur Rahman was posted as diplomat in Geneva in 1971 and he fought in the independence war from foreign soil.
The minister in the programme said many people are engaged in conspiracies and the opposition political parties resorted to anarchy to destabilise the country.
“They cut down trees and uprooted rail tracks. Some western countries termed such activities violence, but this is not violence, this is terrorism,” the minister said.
Citing example he said a police shot a boy in the US while he was playing with his toy gun as the officer thought the boy was trying to shoot him.
“But when we want to protect ourselves, it is termed excessive use of force. They now appear to have toned their voices down but still they are active,” the minister said.
