The Election Commission has announced that 14 upazila parishad elections will be held on May 19. The by-election for the chairman post of Tarakanda Upazila Parishad will also be held on May 19.
Chief election commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the polls schedule yesterday at a press conference at the EC’s media centre in the capital.
The CEC said the commission has held polls for 459 upazila parishads in five phases across the country thus far. According to the poll schedule, the last date for filing nominations is April 24 and the nomination papers will be scrutinised on April 26. The last date for withdrawing nomination is May 3.
The upazilas are Rangpur Sadar, Kaunia, Gangachara, Pirgacha in Rangpur district, Kamarkhand in Sirajganj, Narayanganj Bandar, Gazipur Sadar, Adarsha Sadar and Comilla Sadar(South) in Comilla and Basail in Tangail. The newly formed upazilas are Taltoli in Barguna, Rangabali in Patuakhali, Kalukhali in Rajbari, Bijoynagar in Brahmanbaria.
Meanwhile, the first phase of polls for 97 upazilas were held on February 19, the second phase for 116 upazilas was held on February 27, the third phase for 81 upazilas was held on March 15, the fourth phase for 91 upazilas was held on March 23 and the fifth phase for 73 upazilas was held on March 31.
