Chief election commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad is expected to return home today from an overseas trip of more than a month.
Sources said Rakibuddin, along with his wife, had gone to the USA on a personal visit.
The CEC went on leave on March 3 amid speculations that he had resigned from his post in the middle of conducting local government elections.
The CEC’s personal secretary, AKM Mazharul Islam, said the couple was scheduled to arrive in Dhaka early this morning on a Turkish Airlines flight.
“We are happy that the CEC is returning to the country,” said election commissioner Md Shah Newaz, yesterday.
EC officials said they had sent a letter to the airport authorities asking for the use of the VIP lounge for the CEC and his wife today.
