The BNP has alleged that the government has failed to protect country’s interests because Bangladesh is continuously being deprived of its rightful share of Teesta water, jeopardising crores of lives.
A press release, signed by BNP’s Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed, read: “Because India has been holding back water one-sidedly, the northern region of the country [Bangladesh] has been suffering severely. Agriculture and the environment are under serious threat.”
The release detailed the highlights of Wednesday night’s meeting of the BNP Standing Committee, the highest policymaking body of the party.
It said the party strongly condemned the government’s failure to preserve the country’s interest surrounding the Teesta issue.
From the meeting, the party also issued an urgent call for the government to take immediate steps to ensure the country’s rightful share to the water of Teesta and all the other shared rivers.
The release also accused the administration of being “biased” and the Election Commission “inactive” during the recently concluded upazilaparishad polls, especially with reference to what the party said was widespread “rigging” and “vote robbery” by the ruling party.
“The government, the Election Commission and the role of administration have proved that free and fair election is not possible under the Awami League,” the release said.
According to the release, the meeting urged the government to scrap the decision to hike power tariff, saying blanket corruption in the sector and frequent tariff hikes had led to immense suffering for people.
