Mirza Abbas freed from jail

BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas was freed from the Dhaka Central Jail on Thursday night on bail from the High Court.

Forman Ali, senior superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail, said the BNP leader walked out of the jail at around 9pm after he secured bails from the higher court in all the cases filed against him.

The HC granted the bail of Mirza Abbas on Wednesday for six months in five separate cases filed against him for vandalism and arson to vehicles during the hartal periods, killing and obstructing lawmen from discharging their duties.

The cases were filed with the capital’s Ramna, Shahbagh and Paltan police stations.

Mirza Abbas had surrendered before a Dhaka court on March 16 seeking his bail. The court denied his bail prayer and ordered for sending him to jail.

Witnesses said more than a hundred leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate organisations received the BNP leader with floral wreaths and chanting slogans in front of the jail gate.
