Tangail 8 goes to by-polls today

The residents of Tangail 8 (Basail-Sakhipur) are all set to cast votes in a by-election today to elect their representative to the Parliament.

The polling will open at 8am and continue up to 4pm without any break.

The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Awami League MP Shawkat Momen Shajahan on January 20.

“The Election Commission has taken all necessary preparations for the Tangail by-elections,” Election Commissioner Mohammad Abu Hafiz told the UNB.

He hoped that the by-polls would be free and fair as election-friendly atmosphere prevailed there.

Five candidates are contesting the by-election to the parliamentary constituency.

The MP candidates are Shawkat Momen’s son Anupam Shahjahan of the ruling Awami League, Sadek Siddiqui of Manju-led Jatiya Party and independent Abdul Malek

(Awami League rebel) and Principal Abu Sayeed (Awami League rebel) and Liaqat Ali.

The constituency has a total of 307,382 voters – 145,576 men and 161,806 women – and 711 booths at 117 polling stations in the by-election.
