Suranjit: Khaleda should apologise

Awami League senior leader Suranjit Sengupta has asked BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to apologise to the nation for claiming that Ziaur Rahman was the first president of Bangladesh.

He made the call while addressing a discussion at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Friday afternoon.

On Thursday, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia claimed that party founder Ziaur Rahman was the first president of Bangladesh as he proclaimed the independence of the country.

Tarique Rahman, eldest son of Khaleda Zia and Ziaur Rahman, at a discussion in London first claimed that his father was the first president of the country citing the same logic.

“Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman are making such remarks to divide the nation and mislead the people. For that Khaleda Zia should make an apology to the people," Suranjit said.

He said: “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is politically, constitutionally and historically the first president of Bangladesh.”
