AL bags two more chairman posts

In the re-elections to three upazilas held yesterday for chairman posts, Awami League-backed candidates won in two upazilas while the BNP in one.

Polls were also held yesterday for vice-chairman posts in two upazilas and vice-chairwoman post in one. 

Both the BNP and the Awami League secured vice-chairman posts in Kuliarchar upazila of Kishoreganj and Titas upazila in Comilla.

The Election Commission postponed the polls in some centres in the six upazilas because of violence on March 15, local officials have said.

So far, the ruling Awami League-backed candidates secured 180 chairman posts, BNP 148 and Jamaat-e-Islami-supported candidates won 33 chairman posts.

In Muktagachha of Mymensingh, BNP-backed candidate Zakaria Harun won the chairman post defeating his nearest candidate Billah Hossain, supported by the Awami League.

In Hizla upazila of Barisal, Awami League-backed Sultan Mahmud Tipu was declared winner yesterday. He defeated BNP-backed Dewan Shahidul Islam following re-voting at three polling centres. Rebel BNP candidate Abdul Gaffar Talukdar bagged the third highest number of votes.

The BNP-backed candidate boycotted the elections and the upazila BNP announced hartal for Sunday in the upazila.

In the re-elections held in two centres of Hajiganj upazila in Chandpur, Awami League-backed candidate Abdur Rashid Majumder secured the chairman post defeating Nazrul Islam who was backed jointly by the BNP-Jamaat.

In the upazila, ruling party-backed vice-chairwoman candidate Parveen Islam won over her nearest BNP-backed candidate Rabeya Aktar.

In Comilla’s Titas upazila, ruling party-backed vice-chairman candidate Shahinul Islam won the polls where re-election was held at one centre yesterday. His nearest contender was Jamaat-backed Sagir Hossain.

In Kishoreganj’s Kuliarchar upazila, BNP-backed vice-chairman candidate Mesbah Uddin Ahmed won the post. Re-election was held at one centre.

In Kamalnagar upazila in Lakshmipur, BNP-backed vice-chairwoman candidate Hosna Ara Bashar won the post.
