Shibir-police clash in Sylhet, 10 hurt

About 10, including four policemen, have been injured in clashes between supporters of Islami Chhatra Shibir and law enforcers in Sylhet city on Wednesday.

The incident took place near Lamabazar Madanmohan College around 6:45am in the morning marking the 44th Independence Day of Bangladesh.

Shibir supporters brought out a procession in the area, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rahamatullah said.

Police intervened the procession near the school and a clash ensued soon, he added. Shibir supporters launched brickbats.

“Policemen were compelled to fire 30 rounds of shortgun shots to bring situation under control.”

Two Shibir activists were detained from the spot, he added. Four policemen were injured. Some other Shibir supporters were injured but they fled.
