Awami League claims fourth phase upazila elections held free, fair

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s political affairs adviser HT Imam said the fourth phase of upazila polls held yesterday in 91 upazilas across the country was free and fair than the previous three phases.

“There is no chaos. The 4th phase elections were held amid a few clashes than the last three phases as the EC performed its role accurately through taking necessary actions against any turmoil,,” HT Imam, also co-chairman of election steering committee of ruling AL said in a press conference at the party office in Dhanmondi.

“After all we are satisfied at the elections,” Imam added.

Imam blamed the BNP-Jamaat activists for violent activities in various areas of the country during voting.

“BNP-Jamaat cadres barred minorities in different places like Satkhira and Pirojpur from going to polling centres to cast their franchise,” he said.

About BNP’s allegation of vote rigging against AL, he said BNP emerged as a ‘chatter box’ that used to give false statements. “As they (BNP leaders) have no other tasks, they are busy in giving false statements at their party office.”

In response to a query on sporadic clashes among AL candidates, he said they were investigating into the matter.

In another query over magistracy power of Army, the advisor turned down the claim, telling Army was just given the power of arrest during the polls.

Mentioning the results of 3rd phases, the adviser said the popularity of AL was increasing gradually.

AL central leader Fazilatunnessa Indira, Abu Sayed Al Mahmud Shapon Abu Syed Al Mahmud Shapon and Dr Bodiuzzaman Bhuiyan Dublew were present in the briefing among others.
