Akhtaruzzaman Rajib, a second year student of mass communication and journalism department at Rajshahi University, started losing his eyesight after he was attacked during a peaceful movement on February 2, protesting evening masters courses and a fee hike.
After he attended his final examination viva voce, like other students, he joined the rally organised by the general student body later in the day. Suddenly, bomb splinters from a cocktail hurled by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists in front of the administrative building hit his right eye.
“It happened all of a sudden while I was trying to escape the attack. Soon I realised blood was oozing out of my right eye,” he told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
Rajib, from a poor family in Barguna, is now undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Eye Hospital. He needs to go to India for better treatment.
Fellow Mustafizur Rahman Mishu said they rescued Rajib and admitted him to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital. He was shifted to the eye hospital a month later. Dr Lutfur Rahman of the eye hospital said: “Rajib needs at least Tk4.5 lakh for the first phase of his treatment in India.”
His teachers and friends are going door to door to collect funds for him.
