President Abdul Hamid said it is responsibility of all to expedite the advancement of democracy and to make it more meaningful through maintaining democratic norms and values.
“It is very natural in the democratic system that there will be differences of opinions among the various political parties. But we have to work together for the greater welfare of the country as well as the nation,” he said at a reception accorded to him by the Kishoreganj Zila Samity, Dhaka at Osmani Memorial Auditorium Friday.
The President said the core objective of flourishing democracy is to show tolerance to difference in opinion, mutual respect as well as to strengthen the democratic institutions.
He also called upon countrymen from all walks of life to make active cooperation with the government’s endeavor for ensuring country’s overall development.
“The government’s responsibility is to create development friendly atmosphere, including infrastructure, while the peoples’ duty is to make it successful by taking active participation,” he said.
“Throughout my life, I tried to maintain good relations among the politicians despite of having political and ideological differences. I had worked relentlessly to keep respect and friendliness among politicians,” he said.
As a result, the President said political violence never took place in Kishoreganj district. “However, they (politicians) tried to stand beside each other during crisis period of the country. This tolerance among the politicians will have to be continued,” he said.
President Hamid said everyone is accountable to soil and people of the country as a citizen of Bangladesh. “We all should play our responsibility from respective positions to fulfill this accountability,” he said.
