The Election Commission has been facing difficulties in carry out its regular activities as huge number of police and administrative officials have sought transfers or promotions during ongoing upazila parishad polls.
As numerous applications seeking for transfer and promotion pour onto the commission every day, the commission has been approving applications without scrutiny.
“The concerned section of the commission is failing to carry out its routine work, such as publishing gazettes of the results of the recently held upazila polls, as large number of transfer and promotion applications are being submitted to the commission,” Senior Assistant Secretary Mizanur Rahman said.
EC sources said the commission approved the transfers of around 200 officials and employees yesterday. As per the laws, one cannot be transferred or promoted without the permission of the commission during the polls.
“The commission was now under tremendous pressure from these transfer and promotion application from. As per the laws, no ministry can transfer any official without the permission of the EC,” an election commissioner, seeking anonymity, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
Sources said the applications for transfer were mostly coming from the in administration and police department.
On Monday, a high official of police administration came to commission with a transfer application and later received his permission on the same day. Even transfer applications from huge number of officials from different ministries and department were also pouring into the commission.
In single letters issued on February 24 and 25 respectively, the commission approved transfers of 30 police personnel, 35 government officials, including additional deputy commissioners, additional district magistrates and upazila nirbahi officers.
