At least one person was killed and several more were injured in different districts yesterday, in connection with violence related to the upazila parishad polls.
The deceased, 46-year-old Fazlur Rahman, who was wounded in violence during voting at Jessore’s Chaugachha upazila, died yesterday morning at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
SM Habib, newly elected chairman of Chaugachha upazila, told journalists that the deceased was an activist of Awami League.
Matiar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Chaugachha police station, said Fazlur was wounded critically in a clash between the Awami League and the BNP at Debipur polling station under the upazila.
In Bagerhat, a mob severed the tendons of both the legs of a BNP rebel candidate running for vice-chairman in the upcoming election in Morrelganj upazila, after he allegedly issued threats to them brandishing firearms at Polerhat Bazar in the upazila yesterday, UNB reported.
The vice-chairman aspirant, Abdul Mannan alias Monakha, 50, is undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital under police escort.
Officer-in-Charge of Morrelganj police station M Rakib Khan said supporters of Monakha locked in an altercation with locals at Polerhat Bazar while campaigning for the candidate.
Elsewhere, a local leader of Jatiya Party was stabbed allegedly by BNP men in post-polls violence at Bholar Chawra village of Mohendranagar union in Lalmonirhat sadar yesterday morning.
Shahabul Islam, 32, who is the president of Mohendranagar union unit Jatiya Party, has been admitted to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.
Dr Nabiur Rahman, residential medical officer of the hospital, said Shahabul remained in a critical condition with stab wounds to his hands, legs and head.
Lalmonirhat sadar police station OC Jamir Uddin said police have been deployed to arrest the attackers as well as remaining alert to resist post-poll violence in the area.
Also in Lalmonirhat town, agitated Awami League activists vandalised their own district office on Thursday night, over the ruling party candidate’s failure in the election.
Atiqur Rahman, a local activist of the ruling party, said the Awami League supporters expressed agitation as they believed that the party’s district General Secretary Matiar Rahman and sadar upazila president Golam Mostafa Swapon informally supported the Jatiya Party candidate, causing the failure of the Awami League candidate Nazrul Haque Patwary.
In Gopalganj, miscreants armed with sharp weapons attacked two supporters of newly elected Kotalipara upazila chairman Mojibur Rahman. The injured are Ranjan Halder and Kapil Mondol.
In Cox’s Bazar, at least three people were wounded yesterday morning in post-poll violence. One of the wounded, Mohammad Champa, has been admitted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Zahedul Islam, general secretary of Pekua union Awami League, accused BNP-Jamaat activists for the incident.
In Noakhali, miscreants wounded four brothers – Mizanur, Saiful, Zafar and Maksud – during an attack on Mizanur’s business venture at Chowmahuni Bazar.
Later they also attacked Amir Hossain, another family member of Mizanur who worked as polling agent of BNP-backed chairman candidate in the second phase of upazila polls.
