AL leaders demand release of detainees in Parvez ‘disappearance’ case

Activists of Awami League and its associate organisations in Narayanganj formed a human chain in front of the Bandar Press Club yesterday, demanding the release of some local party leaders and withdrawal of cases against them.

The demonstrators demanded the immediate release of detained Jubo League leaders Ahmed Ali Reza Uzzal, Abu Sufian and Jahirul Islam Bhuiyan alias Parvez.

Parvez, a suspect in the murder of student Tanvir Mohammad Towki, was reportedly picked up by some men in plain clothes from the capital’s Gulshan area on July 5. However, law enforcers have denied arresting him and his whereabouts are unknown. Meanwhile, Abu Sufian was arrested as a suspect in a separate case filed against Parvez’s “disappearance” by his wife, Khurshid Jahan Sohana.

The protesters yesterday alleged that the “Parvez disappearance case” was filed in order to stop them from raising their voices against the killers of Towki.

Abdul Kadir, president of district Jubo League, the ruling party’s youth wing, said a vested group was plotting against them for protesting against Towki’s killers.

Rokonuddin Ahmed, general secretary of district Krishi League, said that the Parvez disappearance case was false.

Rokonuddin claimed that some suspects named in the case were roaming about freely but police did not arrest them, as they were relatives of Narayanganj City Mayor Salina Hayat Ivy.

On March 6, 17-year-old Towki, son of Cultural Activist Rafiur Rabbi, went missing after leaving his home in Narayanganj. Two days later, his body was found on the banks of Shitalakkha River at Charargop.

On March 18, Rabbi filed a complaint with police, accusing several persons of complicity in his son’s murder, including AL lawmaker Shamim Osman, his son Ayan Osman, Jubo League leader Parvez, district Chhatra League Vice President Rajib Das and General Secretary Mizanur Rahman.
