ACC summons Ruhal Haque, Mahbubur Rahman

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned former Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque and former State Minister for Water Resources Mahbubur Rahman Talukder for questioning over allegations of amassing wealth illegally.

ACC Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharia told the Dhaka Tribune.

According to the summon notice, Ruhal Haque has to appear before the ACC at its capital’s Segunbagicha office on February 24 and Mahbubur Rahman on February 23.

Haque was elected to Parliament from Satkhira-3 while Rahman from Patuakhali-4 in the January 5 poll.

The ACC summoned notice to Awami League lawmaker Ruhal Haque to trace the reasons behind the astronomical rise in his wealth, following affidavit copies sent to the Election Commission before January 5 poll.

The ACC on January 22 assigned a deputy director, Khairul Huda, to investigate allegations of illegally acquired wealth and property by Mahbubur Rahman.

The investigation officer has already visited several government offices in Patuakhali to gather information on the assets of the lawmaker, his wife, Preeti Rahman, and their children.

The official also talked with local people, including party supporters and business partners of the MP.

According to a wealth statement submitted to the Election Commission ahead of the January 5 parliamentary polls, Mahbubur Rahman now owns Tk5.25 crore in immovable property, which was shown as Tk36.33 lakh in 2008. Just five years ago, the lawmaker’s annual income was Tk2.15 lakh, which has now jumped to Tk1.50 crore.
