Tarique’s mother-in-law appeals for fresh inquiry

Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, mother-in-law of BNP Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, appealed to the anti-corruption commission to initiate a fresh inquiry into her wealth.

She made the appeal through her lawyer Nasiruddin Asim.

Asim, also the BNP’s human rights affairs secretary, submitted the appeal application to ACC Chairman M Bodiuzzaman yesterday.

Later, he told reporters that his client would comply with the commission’s instructions if it launched a reinvestigation.

However, the ACC said it would move ahead with its plan to file a case against her for not submitting her wealth statement as instructed by the former.

“If they have any objection in this regard, they should clear their position before the court,” ACC Commissioner M Shahabuddin said.

The ACC on Tuesday took the decision to file the case against Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu.

On January 25, 2012, it served a notice on her asking her to submit her wealth statement. Zakir Hossain, caretaker of her house, received the notice on her behalf.

Meanwhile, the commission yesterday questioned two bench clerks in connection with the alleged accumulation of illegal wealth by the recently retired special judge Motaher Hossain, who had acquitted the BNP senior vice-chairman in a money laundering case.
