19-party’s countrywide protest Saturday

The BNP-led 19-party alliance is set to stage rallies across the country on Saturday protesting the police obstruction to their black-flag processions, killing of a BNP leader and attacks on their activists.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement at a press conference at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office on Wednesday evening.

He said: “The rallies will be held at all the divisional cities, district towns and upazila headquarters throughout the country while in the capital, the programme will be held at Suhrawardy Udyan.”

While addressing the press conference, Fakhrul alleged that the law enforcers attacked their peaceful black-flag processions at different parts of the country without any provocation.

Meanwhile, the BNP spokesperson claimed that Satkhira Jubo Dal leader Piarul Islam was killed as police opened fire on a “peaceful” party procession.

He also added that several leaders and activists of the 19-party alliance sustained injuries as police attacked their processions in different areas of the capital.

Besides, he said police arrested a number of their leaders and activists across the country.

The BNP-led 19-party alliance was scheduled to take out black-flag processions across the country, including the capital, on Wednesday.

But, Dhaka Metropolitan Police denied giving permission to BNP for holding black flag procession on city streets on the day, the first day of the 10th parliament.

However, the party declared to continue with its programmes of peaceful black flag processions across the country and at every ward of the capital on Wednesday to protest the “fraudulent elections of January 5.”
