Law minister meets chief justice

Law Minister Anisul Huq sat with Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain yesterday for a one-and-half hour “courtesy meeting” at the Supreme Court. After the meeting, he told the reporters that the government would not interfere with the judiciary in any way.

Anisul said he had told the chief justice that his government would do everything necessary to resolve the problem of the backlog of cases in the judiciary. He would act as the bridge between the judiciary and the executive, the law minister said.

According to Supreme Court sources, there are now about 28 lakh cases pending in the judiciary including the Supreme Court.

On appointing International Crimes Tribunal 1 chairman, the law minister said the government would appoint a chairman soon, adding that he had taken charge of the ministry only seven days ago.

The chairman’s seat for International Crimes Tribunal 1 was vacated after Justice ATM Fazle Kabir retired on December 31 for age limitation which caused delay in issuing the verdict in the case against Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami.

Anisul Huq said it was his topmost priority to continue the war crimes trial while maintaining fairness and international standards as they have been since the inception of the trial. He said his government would implement a zero tolerance to corruption policy.
