Nine activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Shibir were detained in Chittagong, Sylhet and Satkhira early on Friday.
In Chittagong, a team of police arrested two activists of Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, along with lethal weapons, a huge quantity of explosives and bomb making materials from Sitakunda upazila early on Friday.
The arrestees are students of International Islamic University of Chittagong (IIUC), Jainal and Oliullah.
Sitakunda police station Officer-in-Charge Iftekhar Hasan said: “Acting on a tip-off, a special team of police raided a local mess in the upazila’s Madambibir Hat area around 2:45am and arrested them with a large quantity of explosives and bomb making materials."
"Police recovered 2kg of gunpowder, five crude bombs, huge quantity of explosives and lethal weapons from their possession,” he added.
In Satkhira, the members of joint forces arrested four activists of Jamaat-Shibir from three upazila's in an overnight drive.
The arrestees are Abu Zafar, Salekuzzaman, Gaffar Gazi and Aziz.
District police Information Officer Kamal Hossain said: "They were wanted in a number of cases."
In Sylhet, three Shibir members were held with a pipe gun and cartridge from the Shubid Bazar area on Thursday afternoon.
The arrestees are Metropolitan Shibir School and College Affairs Secretary Fakhrul Alam Selim, Biman Bandar Unit President Sadikur Rahman and Ward 8 President Mujahidul Islam.
They were sent to jail earlier on Friday.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Media Wing Chief and Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Mohammad Aiyub confirmed the arrests.
