Re-elections at 390 polling centres in seven seats today

Re-elections are set to be held today at 390 polling centres in seven constituencies, which were postponed because of violence surrounding the January 5 national poll.

However, the Election Commission would not hold the re-election in two centres of Kurigram 4 because of a High Court stay order which had reached the commission, EC officials said.

The voting will start at 8am and continue till 4pm without any break.

The Election Commission has taken special security measures and deployed a large number of law enforcers in these seats for holding the polls in a free, fair and peaceful manner.

Election Commissioner Md Shah Newaz said the commission had completed all preparations for holding the re-elections.

Voting at the polling stations was postponed because of widespread violence, including arson attacks, attacks on election officials and snatching of ballot papers, in the January 5 parliamentary elections.

Of the 392 polling centres in eight seats that were postponed, 57 are in Dinajpur 4, two in Kurigram 4, 54 in Gaibandha 1, 80 in Gaibandha 3, 72 in Gaibandha 4, 46 in Bogra 7, 60 in Jessore 5 and 21 centres in Lakshmipur 1 constituencies. The army would stay deployed at upazila level in these constituencies till January 19.

EC officials said 43 army personnel would be deployed for every 10 centres, 132 police personnel for every three, 82 RAB personnel for every five and 43 BGB personnel for every 10 centres as striking force.

Twenty police personnel each would also be deployed at polling centres in Jessore and Lakshmipur, which are considered by the EC to be the most vulnerable constituencies.

The commission has also deployed 30 executive and eight judicial magistrates in these constituencies for six days, EC officials said.

The EC has already announced the result of 139 of 147 parliamentary seats and published gazette for 290, except two MPs-elect from Jessore 1 and 2.

Earlier, 153 candidates were declared uncontested winners.

EC to examine statement of two Jessore MPs-elect

The commission would take action against two MPs-elect from Jessore 1 and 2 after examining their replies of show cause notices.

Election Commissioner Md Shah Newaz also said the EC would hold hearing on the matter if needed.

The EC withheld the results of two Awami League lawmakers–elect for their alleged violation of electoral code of conduct.

Sheikh Afil Uddin, who was elected uncontested from Jessore 1, and Monirul Islam, who won the polls in Jessore 2, were served show cause notices in this regard.

According to the RPO, if any candidate violates the code, the commission can cancel their candidature and mete out punishment.
