The ruling Awami League would reach a consensus with the BNP if the party leaves violence and cuts its political relationship with Jamaat-e-Islami, said Dr Hasan Mahmud, publicity secretary of Awami League.
The former minister made the statement while expressing his party’s reaction over the speech given by BNP chief Khaleda Zia, on Wednesday evening.
He said: “We can reach a consensus with BNP only if the party shuns the path of violence and severs its political ties with its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami.”
Claiming that BNP was accusing the government for the loss of lives during the recent violence across the country rather than apologising for their misdeeds, he said: “The nation expected that Khaleda would apologise for the recent subversive activities across the country conducted by her party members but she did not do so.
She defended the recent nationwide violence and accused others for her party members’ misdeeds,” he added.
Regarding the recent attacks on minority communities in different parts of the country, he said: “It has already been proven that BNP and its key ally Jamaat were responsible for the attacks on Hindus as those who were detained in this connection admitted that they were BNP-led 18-party members.”
Earlier in the day, BNP chairperson addressed the media and claimed that her party members were not behind the recent subversive activities across the country.
