Obaidul: Govt tenure depends on public will

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader said the government has taken its charge for five years as per the constitution, but the tenure will depend on the public.

He made the statement while exchanging views with officials and employees from the Roads Division and at his ministry conference room on Wednesday afternoon.

The minister said: “The government has taken its charge for five years as per the constitution but, I do not want to say that the government will continue for five years.”

“It will depend on the desire of the people how long it will stay,” he added.

Obaidul Quader said: “People feel proud when they have power. I promise you that I will never be so; I will try to be humble. I will try to work restlessly to satiate people's needs.”

Regarding the inclusion of the Jatiya Party MPs in the cabinet, he said they were once part of the grand alliance and now they are the opposition.

He said they should now criticise the government from the opposition bench.

Criticising the BNP chairperson’s movement, the minister said: “BNP’s strategy was wrong and that is they did not get 500 people to join in their ‘March for Democracy’ programme. We will appreciate them if they try to involve mass people in their movement by changing their strategy.”

“We were embarrassed as a major political party did not participate in the polls,” he admitted.

Quader notified that the main work of his ministry would be to reduce traffic jams, illegal occupation and the control of road accidents.

The minister added that the construction work for Padma Bridge would commence from June and the construction for an elevated express way and metro rail project would end within this tenure of the government.
