A local Awami League leader was allegedly stabbed by BNP supporters in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila during a nationwide anti-polls hartal conducted by the 18-party alliance.
Rafiqul Islam, 46, joint secretary of union Awami League, was attacked in the Burir Bazar area of Mohendranagar union around 9pm on Tuesday night.
The victim told the Dhaka Tribune that about 15 BNP men stabbed him because he was selected as the Awami League polling agent during elections.
Lalmonirhat Sadar Awami League President Golam Mostafa Swapan endorsed the victim's claims, stating that a case will be lodged over the matter.
Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital Residential Medical Officer Nabiur Rahman said Rafiqul had sustained critical stab injuries throughout his body.
Lalmonirhat Sadar police Officer-in-Charge Jamir Uddin said he was aware of the attack and that action would be taken after the case was filed.
