48-hour hartal enters second day

The 48-hour countrywide hartal enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance entered the second day on Tuesday.

The BNP-led opposition alliance announced the fresh programme on Sunday night, demanding cancellation of polls results and protesting killing and arrest of opposition men on the polling day.

The fresh hartal began at 6am Monday that will continue till at 6am Wednesday.

The first day of 48-hour nationwide hartal was observed without major untoward incidents on Monday.

No major incidents took place, except beating up a ruling Awami League man in Satkhira and a cocktail attack on a microbus of private television channel Ekushey Television in the capital’s Mohakhali that left a cameraperson and the driver injured.

The BNP also announced that the countrywide indefinite blockade programme, apart from the hartal, would be continued.

The ruling Awami League swept the violence-hit and low turnout election amid the boycott of the main opposition BNP.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who has been virtually confined in her residence since December 28, rejected the January 5 polls and asked the government to step down from immediately for paving ways for another election under a non-partisan government.
