The fresh 48-hour nationwide hartal, called by the main opposition BNP-led 18-party alliance began on Monday morning.
The opposition alliance called the hartal demanding the cancellation of the 10th parliamentary election held on Sunday.
They also demanded for the rearrangement of the national polls claiming that most of the people of the country have rejected the “farcical polls.”
The shutdown that will end at 6am Wednesday is also meant for protesting the arrest of the opposition leaders and activists.
BNP leader Dr M Osman Farrouk made the announcement on Sunday evening, immediately after the polling end at a press conference at his Gulshan residence.
"Apart from enforcing the indefinite blockade programme, we will enforce the 48-hour hartal from Monday morning,” he added.
He also thanked the people of the country for “boycotting” the “farcical elections.”
He claimed that the law enforcers have killed some 21 activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance while they were observing “peaceful” protest across the country.
The opposition leader said the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia has expressed her deep shock and sorrow for the deaths of her party members.
The ruling Awami League swept the low turnout 10th parliamentary elections.
The opposition boycotted the election as its demand for holding the polls under a non-partisan interim is unheeded.
