Jamaat clash with police in Rajshahi-3

A clash took place between Jamaat-e-Islami supporters and law enforcers in a polling station in Paba upazila, Rajshahi on Sunday morning during elections.

The incident took place during a nationwide anti-polls hartal of the BNP-led 18-party alliance. Jamaat is a key ally of the main opposition BNP.

Over a hundred Jamaat supporters cordoned off Shyampur Government Primary School in Pabamohanpur area around 11am in the morning.

Police stepped back from the area before joint forces arrived and lobbed teargas shells and short gun shells to dispel the supporters. No one was detained.

The Jamaat supporters lobbed several crude bombs at scene.

Voting in the polling station was suspended for about half an hour, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Abu Salem Golam Mahmud said.

Voting resumed in a peaceful and controlled atmosphere under reinforced deployment, he added.
