Vote in nine seats in the capital

Elections will be held in nine constituencies out of 20 in the capital in the 10th parliamentary elections on Saturday.

A total of 1,199 centres have been prepared for 301,971 voters in an election that the opposition alliance is boycotting.

These seats are Dhaka1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 15, 16, 17, and 18. A total of 25 candidates are vying for these seats.

In Dhaka5(Airport, Cantt, Badda, Gulshan, Part of Uttara, Kafrul , Khilgaon), there are four candidates, highest among the consistencies in the capital.

The Dhaka5 constituency includes Demra, Dania, Matuail and Sarulia and their surroundingareas.

In this seat, Habibur Rahman Molla of Awami League is running with the party symbol “boat,”Arju Shah Sayedabadi of Tarikat Federation with “garland,” and Monir Hossain Kamal of Jatiya Party-JP with “bicycle,” Abdur Rashid Sarker of National Awami Party with “hut.” Habibur Rahman Molla won the last time.

Meanwhile, Dhaka 7(Sutrapur, Kotwali and Part of Syampur) is expected to be a heated race as two Awami League men come to face to face in the election.One of the men is Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin,who got the party nomination, while the other one is Haji Selim, who was elected from Awami League in the 1996 elections,but is now running as an independent candidate with the symbol “elephant.”

Another independent candidate Md Riazuddin is running with the symbol “pineapple.”

Ahead of the elections, this constituency has already witnessed election violence.Bomb attacks were made on the election rally of Mohiuddin, who blamed Selim and filed cases against his associates. However, both candidates are enjoying support from various factions of the party.

In five out of the nine seats–Dhaka 6, 7, 15, and 16 –there are three candidates, and two candidates in the rest.

In Dhaka1 (Dohar), Abdul Mannan Khan of Awami League will take on Salma Islam of Jatiya Party (JaPa).

In Dhaka4 (Demra, Part of Khilgaon, Sabujbagh, Shyampur), there is no Awami Leaguecandidate. Jatiya party candidate Syed Abu Hossain with the “plough” symbol will compete with an independent, Md Awlad Hossain, whose symbol is elephant.

In Dhaka6 (Motijheel, Part of Sabujbagh, Khilgaon), another seat Awami League has left to its ally Jatiya Party.Kazi Feroz Rasid is the JaPa candidate there, contending withNational Awami Party candidate Md Akter Hossain and Saidur Rahman Shaheed, an independent candidate.

In Dhaka 15, Kamal Ahmed Mojumdar of Awami League will take on independent Ekhlas Uddin Molla.Another candidate Md Saiful Islam is from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, an ally of the Grand Alliance.

In Dhaka16, where three candidates are contending, there is one candidate from BNF (Bangladesh Nationalist front), one from Awami League and another is an independent.

In Dhaka17 Awami League has no candidate, one candidate is from Jatiya Party-JP, a faction of JP that became allied with Awami League at the end of this tenure, one is independent and another is from BNF.

In Dhaka18, Telecommunications Minister Sahara Khatun will represent Awami League, MM Anwar Hossain will represent JaPa and Atiqur Rahman Nazim will represent BNF.
