Clarification on Khaleda’s 'confinement’ sought

A delegation of BNP Parliamentary Party led by the opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque requested President Abdul Hamid to ask the government to clarify whether the opposition leader was under house arrest.

They made the request during a meeting with the president at Bangabhaban on Friday, a day after another BNP delegation held a meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament Shirin Sharmin Choudhury on the same issue.

After the meeting, Farroque told the journalists: " We have requested the president to ask the government to clarify if BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was under house arrest."

He said: “We informed the president that BNP chairperson cannot go to the office nor the leaders can meet her because they law enforcers have bared them.

Her house is being surrounded by heavy sand-laden trucks and layers upon layers of intelligence agency personnel," he added.

He alleged that whichever leader tries to meet her is being arrested by the law enforcers. Meanwhile, the leaders also raised the issue of human rights, which is preserved in the constitution, while speaking to the president.

Farroque said the president has assured them of taking constitutional steps regarding the matter.

When asked whether they were going to meet Khaleda, he said they would eventually but did not specify the time. He said he would briefed journalists about the detail of the meeting anytime after 5pm.
