Sheikh Hasina will address the nation not as the prime minister, but as chief of Awami League, 48 hours ahead of the national elections, a close aide said.
She will seek votes for her party during the speech, the prime minister's special assistant Mahbubul Haque Shakil told the Dhaka Tribune late on Tuesday.
Publicity is prohibited from 48 hours ahead of the polls. That is why the date for Sheikh Hasina's speech is on January 3, he said.
Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will broadcast her speech. The January 5 national elections will be held in absence of the main opposition BNP.
Because of this over half the 300 constituencies will be won uncontested. Awami League will be elected uncontested in 127 constituencies.
