Only Bangladeshis can break the ongoing political impasse over the formation of a polls-time government, according to the US envoy to Bangladesh.
“It is not a question of America or anyone else having a plan to break this political impasse; only Bangladeshis can resolve the impasse,” US Ambassador Dan W Mozena said in reply to a question during a live chat on Facebook yesterday.
When asked what steps the US would take if the BNP did not join the elections, he replied: “I think the next step is for the two major parties to engage in a meaningful dialogue to ensure that elections are free and fair in the eyes of the Bangladeshi people.”
He also urged all sides to eschew violence and protect the rights of ethnic and religious minorities.
